I know I’m doing this a little backwards, but I’m going to write about my favorite toys that my kids’ received last Christmas. The reason why I’m backing up and writing about last year’s gifts is because I’ve been able to watch my kids in action and see what they like the best and what kept them busy for the longest times! I’m hoping these toys are both still available or at least available in some sort of upgraded version by the time this blog is up! Because in my humble opinion, this preschool aged gift idea list is filled with good stuff that I think your kids will love too!
Water Sink and Dishes
The B Toys Sink Playlset is #1 because it is just so fun! There is something about being able to copy their parents, even if it is something as mundane as daily household chores that is so satisfying for kids. Some features that I thought were cute touches were that the temperature of the water changes the color of the dishes and the sink has running water! It uses some sort of motor to recycle the water that you fill it with, so it feels like they are playing with running water without the waste. My kids “wash dishes” for a very long time. However, I do want to warn you that at this age, there is a lot of spillage that happens. I just try to minimize the mess, but placing it over an extra large doggy absorbent pad and drying the water periodically if it splashes on the floor. If that doesn’t sound fun to you as a parent, you don’t have to get this toy. But I’m telling you, my kiddos were in love!
Smol Miniature Bounce House
Internet ads really targeted me with this one and… the bait worked! We ended up getting the Smol Mini Bounce House for our kids. It does cost a pretty penny, but it is a little more affordable than other bouncy houses available for purchase. The reason why I love this thing is that it claims to blow up and deflate in 3 minutes and it really does just that! It deflates and folds up neatly into a small(ish) bag that can be tucked away and out of sight. It’s a win-win because I don’t have to worry about too much clutter in the house, and we can pull this thing out for our kids to jump when I feel like they need to get their energy out while stuck indoors! You should, however, pay attention to the weight limit restrictions since it is meant for smaller children.
Toddler Camera
My daughter is quite the shutterbug, always pretending to take pictures. So, it was only fitting to put a toddler digital camera on her Christmas list. I was actually so pleased to find that this camera is better than I thought it would be. It is the perfect size for tiny hands and made of a durable, grippy material that sorta acts like a bumper just in case the camera is dropped. This is something that may require assistance as far as setting it up and picking the right settings, but once that is done, your toddler can let loose! It is so fun to watch her taking pictures of everything and later flipping through the camera roll together to see what she snapped pictures of!
Build a Garden
This build your own garden toy, complete with a variety of flowers, stems, and bugs, was a hit for my kids. I knew that it would be a fun toy to play with, but I was not prepared for how much my kids would be interested in this toy! I love how user friendly it is for younger kids. Once my kiddos figured out how to build their gardens, I watched as their creativity took the wheel. The base of the flowers are able to be configured in a variety of different ways and it seems as though any way my kids put the flowers together looked like a beautiful arrangement. They also seemed to find enjoyment in making the tallest possible flowers they could make. Overall, this toy got so much love from my kids that I give this toy an easy 10/10!
Doctor Kit
This gift could not have come at a better time. My daughter had a doctor’s visit right before the holidays, so you can just imagine her excitement when she saw all her very own “doctor stuff!” There are so many doctor kits available to purchase, but we couldn’t go wrong with the Melissa and Doug brand! Though this set doesn’t have any fancy electronic components, I always find that their pretend play sets are so creative and durable. It has everything from a pretend stethoscope to reusable cloth bandaids all in one doctor’s bag to keep all your medical supplies organized.
Pretend Register
Pretend play has been a big theme for our toys during the preschool ages and I’m sure they will be utilized beyond that as well. A fun toy that my kids’ received was a toy register, complete with groceries to scan and a credit card to swipe. I know, cute right?! I can still remember when I was a little kid and all I wanted to do when I went to the store was try scanning the items at the checkout counter? I’m sure it’s more of a reality for some kids because there are self checkout counters now, but imagine getting to pretend play with a beeping scanner all day?!
Toy Drum Set
This electronic drum set is so fun! It comes pre-programmed with a variety of different songs that my kids recognize. It comes with a working toy mic and the drum has correlating sounds when hit with its drum sticks. You could also just choose a song and have a little dance party!
Scribble Scrubbies
I love pulling out Scribble Scrubbies when I want to combine an artsy activity with pretend play! There’s also a variety of different characters to choose from. My son loved that he was able to color the Paw Patrol! And, my daughter loves that after coloring these little kittens, she could give them a bath in the little tub that her kit came with. To my surprise, the markers washed off of the characters so nicely that they were back to their original white color after their pretend baths!
I know toys are not the end all and be all of the Christmas season and that there are so many other ways to celebrate, but they do come to mind when you’re thinking of gifts that little kids would actually enjoy. The toys mentioned are just so well loved by my kids that I thought they deserved an honorable mention in the form of a gift guide! Hopefully this helps give you some gift ideas for the special little ones in your life!
