Fall is by far my favorite season! The moderate sweater weather and the scent of baked goods and coffee… that’s my jam! What’s not to love about a season that feels like a warm hug? Other people might find the end of summer somewhat depressing, but all I can think about is the characteristic coziness of Fall about to ensue and the natural return to routine. And for us creatures of habit, this is a big deal. This is a time of comfort as well as productivity! I can think of so many reasons why I love this season, but I think the best parts are all the fun, yet still low key, Fall activities that I enjoy doing with my family! To me, this season has so many opportunities for family fun, but without some of the pressure and rushing around like other holiday seasons. If you’re looking for a few easy going family fun activities to do this Fall, keep reading!
Fall Baking
The first thing that I do that really gives Fall vibes in my home is baking. I actually love to bake all year round, but there is something special about the different signature fall flavors. I love when my house is warmed by the oven and the sweet smell of cinnamon rolls, maple scones and all my favorite fall favorites wafts through the air. Whether you choose to involve your kids with your Fall baking escapades or not, the outcome is something you will definitely all enjoy! This time of year, I love to pull out Joanna Gaine’s 2nd cookbook, Magnolia Table Volume 2, for some of my favorite Fall baking recipes, like maple walnut scones, or just a classic coffee cake!
Pumpkin Patch
Is it Fall without visiting the pumpkin patch? Since having children, I always look forward to visiting the pumpkin patch every year. Depending on what is available at your local pumpkin patch, there are a variety of kid friendly activities that could be enjoyed as a family. Some of those activities include hay rides, visiting the farm animals, corn mazes, and of course, picking out some pumpkins! I know that one day, my kids will outgrow doing some of these activities with me and their dad, so I’m holding on to this tradition for as long as I can! Just don’t forget to wear a good pair of boots, like these Hunter boots! It gets muddy out there!
Fall Movie/Cozy Day In
Even when our intention is to go out, sometimes the weather has different plans, forcing you to pivot. These days call for a Fall cozy day in. I don’t mind these days at all. Getting back into your cozy clothes, drinking some hot coco, snuggling and watching a Fall themed movie is the best! My kids are still little, so we’re still in our Disney’s Coco and Monster’s University era, but I’m hoping to switch to the spookier variety as soon as everyone gets older. You can also fill your day with reading and other slow, cozy activities at home.
Farmers Market
Our local Farmer’s Market is open from Spring to early Fall. So, I liked to try to get one last Farmer’s Market run in during the Fall before they close up shop. That way, we can get some fresh air, while browsing the fresh food options. Going to the Farmer’s market really just gives us an excuse to spend some extra time strolling outside taking in the Fall ambience, while enjoying some warm drinks and fresh snacks! If your kids are still small enough, my husband and I like to tow our kids around in our Veer wagon. This wagon is easy to maneuver and gives our kids a place to comfortably sit while we stroll around.
Fall Themed Arts and Crafts
Arts and crafts are for all year round, but Fall themed kids crafts are sooooo stinkin’ cute! And they have so many sub categories! You can focus on the Fall leaves as a focal point, paint a pumpkin, make a spooky Halloween themed craft, or even Thanksgiving crafts. Themes during this time of year are endless! Not to mention, they can really build anticipation and excitement for upcoming events. So, don’t forget to restock on some of your family’s favorite art supplies. Some of my family’s fall favorites are Crayola Washable Paint and googly eyes because they make anything look more fun!
The Fall activities that I enjoy doing with my family are not extravagant by any means, but they are ones that I really look forward to doing! And I find that the kids enjoy doing just about anything, as long as it is time spent together. So don’t feel like you need to break the bank! Planning out one or two Fall activities a week will help to keep your children busy and will begin to build lasting memories during this time of year!
